Co-op member Susanne Rix is a passionate advocate for food growing and sustainability and the creator the Blue Mountains Edible Garden Festival and Trail on the weekend of 3–4 March.

Susanne has been growing food since she got her first little garden and began reading about permaculture in the 1970s.

FESTIVAL EVENTS: GROWING FOOD FOR CHANGE

We live in uncertain times, but one thing we know for sure is that we all need to eat!

Another thing we know is that a food system that includes local, regenerative agriculture means greater food security, a healthier environment and climate, and a stronger local economy.

So, what is the vision for local food security and how are Blue Mountains residents working towards this?

NOURISHING FAMILIES AT NORTH KATOOMBA HUB

Nourishing Families – making sauerkraut with  Danielle O’Donoghue at the North Katoomba Community Hub play group.

In 2017 the Co-op ran a pilot wholefood cooking and nutrition program, Nourishing Families, in partnership with Connect Child and Family Services, for parents and carers of children aged 0–5 at their North Katoomba Community Hub Play and Chat supported playgroup.

As a not-for-profit community-owned and managed co-op, one of our core values is social responsibility. One of the ways we contribute to our community is by donating around ten per cent of our surplus to support local food related and social justice projects every year.
