What’s in season?

Spring can be a transitional time for fruit and veg with winter crops on the way out and summer veg just a twinkle in our local farmers’ eye. (See Hannah Axelsen’s excellent blog on the “hungry gap”.) But because Australia is blessed with diverse growing conditions and climates, we can still enjoy a good deal of fruit and veg year round. Remember though, it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly to eat seasonally and locally.

On the shelves this month you’ll find:

Local citrus including Seville oranges for marmalade (see recipe here) and tangelos, leafy greens, broccolini, snow and sugar snap peas, radish, coriander and parsley, cabbage, Romanesco, salad mix, lettuce, and broad beans are starting to arrive.

Stay tuned for asparagus season…coming soon!

Here’s a great spring salad using seasonal veg.

Halin’s beautiful freshly picked garden salad of mustard greens, self-seeded purple mizuna, rocket, oak leaf lettuce, coriander, calendula and viola flowers, flowering Chinese ‘gai lan’ broccoli and walnuts is dressed simply with olive oil and lemon juice. Add goats’ cheese for extra zing!
