The Co-operative

The Co-operative

The Blue Mountains Food Co-op is a not-for-profit community-owned and managed organisation. It began over 30 years ago when a small group of local people joined together to purchase and share quality organic food at affordable prices. We’ve come a long way since then, but this purpose remains essentially unchanged

Co-op Mission

Our mission is to provide high quality food and eco-friendly products to members and the local community.

Our Aims

We aim to support the community, our members and our environment by:

  • Selling and promoting organic, biodynamic and other wholefoods.
  • Dispensing produce in bulk, wherever possible.
  • Purchasing Australian goods if these are available at a similar quality and price, in preference to imported goods.
  • Encouraging the re-use of bottles, jars, paper and plastic bags.
  • Recycling wherever re-use is not possible.
  • Encouraging the local production and distribution of organically grown fruit and vegetables.
  • Informing members and other customers about the benefits and uses of the products we sell.
  • Providing a friendly, personal and relaxed shopping atmosphere.
  • Being community owned and managed.
  • Keeping prices as low as possible whilst ensuring that the Co-op can adequately run on a day-to-day basis, and improvements can be made.
  • Encouraging active community and membership participation in the running of the shop.

Co-op Values

The Co-op is based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. We believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

How is the Co-op Run?

The Co-op is governed by a voluntary Board made up of directors who are elected annually by members. We hold Board meetings on the third Tuesday of every month and all members are welcome to attend. The Co-op manager and a paid team of dedicated staff are responsible for the running of the shop on a day-to-day basis.

What is a Co-op?

Generally a co-operative business belongs to the people who use it – people who have come together to provide themselves with the goods and services they need. The co-operative model of enterprise can be applied to any business activity.

Because co-operatives are owned and democratically controlled by their members, the decisions taken by co-operatives balance the need for profitability with the needs of their members and the wider interests of the community. Members have a say in how the business is run through active participation in their cooperative.

Members can ensure that their cooperative business provides the best quality products and services at the lowest possible cost, within an ethical framework that members agree on.
