COMMUNITY DONATIONS
27th February, 2018

As a not-for-profit community-owned and managed co-op, one of our core values is social responsibility. One of the ways we contribute to our community is by donating around ten per cent of our surplus to support local food related and social justice projects every year.

In 2017, the Co-op Board allocated $7000 to community donations, and directed $1050 remaining from the 2016 budget to pilot Nourishing Families, a whole food cooking and nutrition program for families with young children at the North Katoomba Community Hub – see Nourishing Families.

During 2017, we supported the following organisations with regular donations:
• Aboriginal Culture & Resource Centre – children’s, elders’ and family support programs
• Blue Mountains Family Support Service – emergency relief
• Blue Mountains Refugee Support – food for refugee families in detention and in the community
• Dianella Cottage – community support
• Garguree Swampcare – food for volunteers
• Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre – community lunches, community development projects and Vale Street community mental health project
• Lawson Primary School – breakfast program
• North Katoomba Public School – breakfast program
• Let There Be Soup – free soup and chai for those in need
• Katoomba Community Gardens – community events and seeds for planting
• Blue Mountains Food Rescue – affordable meals and emergency relief
• Wagana Aboriginal Dancers.

We gave one-off donations to:
• Blue Mountains East Timor Quiz
• Blue Mountains SCU Family Support Fundraiser
• Indigenous Intellectual Property Conference
• Girls Education Fundraiser: Do It In A Dress
• UNSW Soup Kitchen project.

Throughout the year, we also collect your cash donations via the Co-op donations box, located at the end of the counter in the main shop. In 2017 we collected for the Papua New Guinea Nutrition Project, Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group and Thrive Services Christmas appeal. We’re currently collecting for Close the Gap to support Indigenous health equity. Next time you’re at the till, please drop any spare cash or change you have in the box.

If you want to find out more about the Co-op’s community donations program send us an send us an email, marked attention Lesley Co-op Donations Coordinator in the subject line.
