WHAT’S THE BUZZ?
19th September, 2017

Spring is here and soon you may be lucky enough to see a very cute noisy bee with a blue striped bottom buzzing around your borage. If you do, then you have been beefriended by the beautiful, solitary native blue banded bee. A fantastic buzz pollinator and one of the 350 species of native bees recorded in Greater Western Sydney region.

SEASONAL GROWING TIPS – SPRING 2017

One of the frequently asked questions I get is “How do you control pests and diseases?” Which, when you think about it, is a pretty important question. Because the last thing you want after all the effort you put into growing food is to watch it get eaten by something other than you or your family and friends!

The answer is a little complex, with lots of side alleys and some interesting biology.

GLASS: REUSE OR RECYCLE?

ABC TV’s recent Four Corners program ‘Trashed’ revealed that vast amounts of the glass collected for recycling in Australia is actually being stockpiled in warehouses or going into landfill.

IT’S A WRAP!

Our focus on Plastic Free July this year was a great success: prompting much discussion about the environmental damage caused by ever-increasing quantities of plastic waste, and the ways that we can all reduce plastic use, by being conscious of it and beginning to change our habits.

Shirley Lewis aka ‘The Bag Lady’ draws the Great BYO Bags and Containers Challenge winner.

BOOMERANG BAGS LAUNCH

Trish Doyle MP officially launched Boomerangs Blue Mountains at the Co-op on Saturday 2nd September. Boomerang Bags are now available at the shop to borrow and bring back, and Co-op members can earn volunteer points for sewing bags until the end of September. (more…)

REVIEW OF FREE SUGARS by Sallyanne Pisk

Are all sugars equal? Co-op Research Group member Sallyanne Pisk looks into the health and environmental issues related to the consumption of free sugars. Read her paper Review of Free Sugars.

Sallyanne is an accredited practising dietitian and nutritionist. She writes a weekly health blog www.eatingforyou.com.au and is the author of the book Eating for You.

Talk to Sallyanne about nutrition and healthy living in the main shop on the first Wednesday of every month for Wellness Wednesday.
