One of the central concepts in organic growing is feed the soil, not the plant. The idea is that if you work on building soils through organic processes (as opposed to synthetic ones), you provide plants with the conditions they require for healthy growth. Healthy soils lead to vigorous plants, which are less susceptible to pest and disease attacks. So, it’s always compost season.

Which leads me to one of the most asked questions I receive: “How do you make compost? Mine is all smelly and I can never use it.”

HOW TO ERADICATE MONTBRETIA CORMS

Montbretia growing in the bush plus close up of rhizome and corms

Montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) is a horticultural hybrid plant that has escaped into bushland areas and become a hard-to-eradicate weed, out-competing native plants. In the Blue Mountains it is classed as a noxious weed.

HOW TO COMPOST WEEDS BY LYNDAL SULLIVAN

None of your weeds need to go to landfill or be removed from your garden for processing. They can all be composted, including seeds and tubers (except Montbretia corms*). This hot composting method will compost down your weeds in about 3 months.

A GULLY STORY – SATURDAY 18 MARCH 2017

Local Gundungurra man David King will be at the Co-op’s new space this Saturday 18 March, sharing stories about his family and The Gully (Garguree) – a designated Aboriginal place in Katoomba, and a special place in our community.

Come hear the stories of Aunty Mary’s removal and reconnection from her son David. Have a laugh, shed a tear and see the Aboriginal connection to Country.  This Saturday from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, Shop 3 Ha’penny Lane Katoomba (just across the lane from the main shop).

 

AUTUMN HARVEST PRICE COMPARISON

Our certified organic produce arrives fresh from the Sydney organic markets three days a week.  It’s surprisingly affordable too, as this comparison of the Co-op’s organic prices with those of two local supermarkets on 6th March shows:
