Where are my eggs and where’s my rice?

Hungry Co-op shoppers will have noticed a recent absence of Australian brown rice and organic eggs. So what’s up?

CULTURED VEG
9th March, 2015

For 40,000 years fermented foods have been part of cultures throughout the world. Not only are they a good way to store abundant harvests through the hard seasons, they also help to create new flavours and culturally unique dishes. From krauts to kombucha, kefirs to kimchi, and my favourites: coffee, cheese and chocolate, fermentation is everywhere!

WHAT’S IN SEASON
9th March, 2015

March 2015
What a delicious transitional time of the year! Grab a tropical mango or pineapple from the organic stand, a local fig from Hazelbrook or a pear from Katoomba. One of the wonderful benefits of the local stand is the incredible freshness. It’s not unusual to find produce picked that very morning!

GARDEN TIPS FROM LOCAL GROWERS
9th March, 2015

In March the garden can still be abundant with the last of the summer crops. All too soon though it’s time to take stock and tidy up spent crops, using the greens in compost or digging them into the garden. With all the rain and bursts of heat it’s also a great time to attack those weeds.

COLIN’S SUMMER GARDEN
9th February, 2015

A summer garden in Katoomba

After his annual break from producing food for the Co-op, Colin Gliddon returns every spring with his bountiful rhubarb bunches. Colin is one of our main suppliers of local rhubarb, and also brings in parsley, squash, zucchini and corn. We decided to visit his Katoomba garden after its winter hiatus to see what he can produce over the subsequent spring and summer seasons.

STOCK NEWS WITH MIKE P
8th February, 2015

As Summer quickly moves towards Autumn we are very fortunate at the Co-op to sell some wonderful local fruit. Crisp and crunchy apples and pears from Katoomba, Bilpin and Bathurst are arriving daily. Paul Herzog is bringing heritage apples, grown in Katoomba, such as Gravensteins (an old Dutch variety) and Eddy Hungerford has his popular Prima apples, certified organic from Bilpin. Also try the various local pears such as Nashi and Howell. With our expanded cool room storage we are now selling even crunchier and longer-lasting apples. Sam’s sensational Logan Brae Apple Juice will be back on the shelves  as soon as the new season apples have been picked and pressed.

FINDING A NEW LIFE FOR FLEXIBLE PLASTICS
8th February, 2015

By MAEVE DUNNET

I’ve always been passionate about recycling: it feels awful to throw away so much stuff. When I was little we had a tip in the back paddock where all the tins and bottles went (there was no plastic then). All the fruit and veggie scraps went to the compost heap for the veggie garden.

I’ve always dreamed of living in a place where everything was used or found a new life as something else: a place where rubbish was not rubbish – like weeds in permaculture, just plants out of place. Of course I put my recycling out but it’s awful that there’s so much plastic that can’t be recycled.

At the Co-op so many things come in plastic, which in turn is collected by our friendly garbage truck and sent to the tip: garbage bins full of it every week.
