SUNNY BUT CHILLY MT VIC GARDEN
4th June, 2015

worms and bees are what it’s all about…

Local grower Michael Hurst popped into the Co-op a few weeks to stock up on garden seeds. That week the temperature had plummeted after the rain and the icy Mountains winds had set in, blowing all the pretty autumn leaves away. As he is located up in chilly Mt Vic we wanted to know whether he was planting now or planning for spring. Michael was indeed planting, so we decided to visit his hilltop garden to learn about how he and his partner, Sandra, grow such great herbs, tomatoes and greens in such cold conditions. (more…)

STOCK NEWS MAY
30th April, 2015

As we eagerly approach the opening of our new shop I’ve been busy buying lots of new lines for our current shop. My personal favourites include the new Thomas Chipman Blue Corn & Quinoa Corn Chips which bring back happy memories of lazy days in Amsterdam munching on Little Bear Blue Corn Chips, but I digress, so on with the report…

PRICE COMPARISON: LOCAL VS MARKET
30th April, 2015

There are many reasons to choose to buy local fruits and vegetables: freshness, fewer food miles and the opportunity to support the local community are just a few.

The Co-op’s local produce has increased dramatically over the last few years. Our customers love to buy locally grown produce and more backyard growers have been growing for us. Some people have small orchards and sell us the delicious fruits of their harvest.

It seems that we are getting new consigners weekly at this busy harvest time of the year.

It is our policy that consignment fruits and vegetables are sold at a maximum of 10% below the certified organic fruits and vegetable price for that item. Prices can vary a lot over the season due to scarcity and gluts, and weather conditions can affect harvests too. The impacts of storms, fires and disease can push prices up. For example lemons are not available from Australian growers in summer and haven’t yet come down in price.

10th March, 2015

Paul Herzog has been bringing Katoomba-grown fruit to the Co-op for over a decade, making him one of our original suppliers of local produce. It all began over thirty years ago when Paul bought his bush block, built himself a home, a greenhouse and sheds and began his gardening adventure by planting his first fruit trees.

CULTURED VEG
9th March, 2015

For 40,000 years fermented foods have been part of cultures throughout the world. Not only are they a good way to store abundant harvests through the hard seasons, they also help to create new flavours and culturally unique dishes. From krauts to kombucha, kefirs to kimchi, and my favourites: coffee, cheese and chocolate, fermentation is everywhere!

WHAT’S IN SEASON
9th March, 2015

March 2015
What a delicious transitional time of the year! Grab a tropical mango or pineapple from the organic stand, a local fig from Hazelbrook or a pear from Katoomba. One of the wonderful benefits of the local stand is the incredible freshness. It’s not unusual to find produce picked that very morning!

GARDEN TIPS FROM LOCAL GROWERS
9th March, 2015

In March the garden can still be abundant with the last of the summer crops. All too soon though it’s time to take stock and tidy up spent crops, using the greens in compost or digging them into the garden. With all the rain and bursts of heat it’s also a great time to attack those weeds.
