SUMMER PLANTING TIPS FROM LOCAL GROWERS

Colins summer harvest

A great find on what to plant through the seasons was recommended by keen gardener and one of the Co-op staff,  Louisa. It’s a website that can send you email reminders on what to plant seasonally in your region and it is called Gardenate.

It’s all about keeping cool in these hot, hot days. Water in the cool of the day. Aim for the morning but if the afternoon is the only time try and do it before sunset. There is less risk of mildew which can attack the leaves and stems of plants, as the plants can dry out a little. It can be tricky because as we know the weather being so changeable doesn’t help this risk.

If you don’t water lots, make it a long deep water to really get down to the roots of the plants.

Shade the babies. If you have planted in this season, and it gets really hot, protect with shade cloth. I have also used a cut open potato sack on a stick frame in the heat of the day. It does block the sun, so out of the heat I remove it to give the plants some essential sunlight. You can often get potato sacks from the box rack outside the Co-op when we have surplus.

Protect your fruit trees from our lovely wildlife! Net or use white paper bags so the sun can still get through. Keep an eye on it for other pests that may sneak in.

If fruit does fall to the ground, rake it up and compost to reduce the risk of disease.

With the warm weather and lovely rain, its time to weed, weed and weed!
