Co-op member Susanne Rix is a passionate advocate for food growing and sustainability and the creator the Blue Mountains Edible Garden Festival and Trail on the weekend of 3–4 March.

Susanne has been growing food since she got her first little garden and began reading about permaculture in the 1970s.

We live in uncertain times, but one thing we know for sure is that we all need to eat!

Another thing we know is that a food system that includes local, regenerative agriculture means greater food security, a healthier environment and climate, and a stronger local economy.

So, what is the vision for local food security and how are Blue Mountains residents working towards this?

WHAT’S THE BUZZ?

Spring is here and soon you may be lucky enough to see a very cute noisy bee with a blue striped bottom buzzing around your borage. If you do, then you have been beefriended by the beautiful, solitary native blue banded bee. A fantastic buzz pollinator and one of the 350 species of native bees recorded in Greater Western Sydney region.

IT’S A WRAP!

Our focus on Plastic Free July this year was a great success: prompting much discussion about the environmental damage caused by ever-increasing quantities of plastic waste, and the ways that we can all reduce plastic use, by being conscious of it and beginning to change our habits.

Shirley Lewis aka ‘The Bag Lady’ draws the Great BYO Bags and Containers Challenge winner.

STUDENTS REDUCE WASTE WITH SCULPTURE

BOOMERANG BAGS AT THE CO-OP
5th July, 2017

Our collaboration with Boomerang Bags Blue Mountains begins this Saturday at our Plastic Free July Community Celebration at the Co-op where the bag people will be sewing bags, screen printing bag pockets and handing out take home kits.

We have a special opportunity for Co-op Members to volunteer to make bags in our newly appointed sewing room. If you are an experienced sewer and would like to earn your volunteer points sewing instead of working in the shop, you can book in at the main counter but please specify that you’d like to sew.
