In April, the Blue Mountains Food Co-op will partner with the 2018 Varuna & Sydney Writers’ Festival and Blue Mountains Library and Cultural Centre to present Cracking Climate by Cracking Consumption, a thought-provoking discussion with leading thinkers on climate change and consumption Dr Joëlle Gergis and Richard Denniss.
Late summer and autumn is a time of bounty: the local stand is overflowing with chemical-free fruit and veg from local growers; and from the organic markets, the late summer fruit sits alongside its new season cousins.
Co-op member Susanne Rix is a passionate advocate for food growing and sustainability and the creator the Blue Mountains Edible Garden Festival and Trail on the weekend of 3–4 March.
Susanne has been growing food since she got her first little garden and began reading about permaculture in the 1970s.

We live in uncertain times, but one thing we know for sure is that we all need to eat!
Another thing we know is that a food system that includes local, regenerative agriculture means greater food security, a healthier environment and climate, and a stronger local economy.
So, what is the vision for local food security and how are Blue Mountains residents working towards this?
I first became interested and concerned about the sustainability of the food systems that feed us as a student of Political Science and Environmental Studies at UNSW many years ago.
